Insulating your attic with spray foam insulation can reduce your heating bills by up to 50%.
Spray foam insulation is a polyurethane polymer and is chemically inert. This means that after it has been applied it does not pose any health and safety risk making it an ideal insulation material for attic conversions.
There are 2 types of spray foam insulation, open cell and closed cell. Open cell foam is used in all domestic or residential applications, closed cell foam is used in industrial or commercial applications.
We use Poliuretan Spray S-OC (6,8,10 kg) which is a thermal-acoustic polyurethane system that has met NSAI standards.
The NSAI has conducted rigorous tests to make sure the foam performs to the manufacturer's specification and is tested in Irish climatic conditions.
Section B.5.2.1 R 2 (a) of the Irish Building Regulation regarding the Conservation of Fuel and Energy – Dwellings Building Regulations 2011 states that: "Insulation between and below rafters, 50 mm ventilated cavity between insulation and sarking felt"
The reasoning behind this rule is to allow your roof timbers to 'breathe'. The escaping water vapour needs to find access to the outside air without impediment so a 50mm air gap is required between roofing felt and insulation material.
